Accessing the Income Tax portal has become an essential part of every taxpayer's life in India, whether for filing returns, checking refund status, or downloading Form 16. However, losing your registered mobile number or switching to a new one without updating portal details can create a significant hurdle, especially when the system relies heavily on OTP-based authentication.
Why Mobile Number Matters for Income Tax Portal
The Income Tax Department uses your registered mobile number as a primary security measure. Every login attempt triggers an OTP sent to this number, making it nearly impossible to access your account if you no longer have access to that mobile connection. This situation commonly arises when people lose their phones, change operators, or let old numbers expire.
Alternative Methods to Access Without OTP
The Income Tax Department has recognized this challenge and provided alternative authentication methods for taxpayers who cannot receive OTP on their registered mobile numbers.
Using Aadhaar OTP
If your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN and you have access to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number, you can use Aadhaar OTP for authentication. On the login page, select the option to login using Aadhaar OTP instead of the mobile number registered with the e-filing portal. This works only if your Aadhaar mobile number is active and different from your e-filing registered number.
Net Banking Authentication
Another viable option is using net banking credentials from authorized banks. The Income Tax portal supports EVC (Electronic Verification Code) generation through net banking of several major banks including SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and others. When logging in, choose the net banking option and proceed with your bank credentials to authenticate your identity.
Using Demat Account
Taxpayers holding demat accounts can also generate EVC through their depository participant accounts. This option is available for those with accounts at NSDL or CDSL depositories. The system will redirect you to your depository's portal where you can authenticate and generate the verification code.
Updating Mobile Number on Portal
If you have temporary access through alternative methods, immediately update your mobile number to prevent future lockouts.
- Log in using Aadhaar OTP or net banking
- Navigate to 'My Profile' or 'Profile Settings'
- Select 'Update Mobile Number'
- Enter your new mobile number
- Verify it through OTP sent to the new number
- Complete the update process
Offline Method Through Jurisdictional Assessing Officer
When all electronic methods fail, taxpayers can approach their jurisdictional Assessing Officer (AO) physically. You need to submit a written request along with identity proof documents. The process involves:
- Downloading the mobile number update request form from incometax.gov.in
- Filling it with current and new mobile number details
- Attaching self-attested copies of PAN card, Aadhaar, and address proof
- Submitting physically at your AO's office
The AO will verify your documents and update the mobile number in the system within a few working days.
Using the Helpdesk
The Income Tax Department's helpdesk can assist with mobile number-related issues. You can:
- Call the toll-free number 1800 103 0025 (for e-filing queries)
- Send an email to the grievance redressal portal
- Raise a ticket on the e-filing portal's 'Grievance' section if you can access it through alternative methods
Be prepared to provide your PAN details, registered email, and other verification information.
Preventive Measures
To avoid such situations in future, taxpayers should maintain updated contact information on the portal. Keep both mobile number and email address current, and link your Aadhaar properly. Consider enabling multiple authentication methods so you always have backup access options.
Additionally, note down your registered details in a secure location and inform a trusted family member about your tax portal credentials in case of emergencies.
